About The Audience

Kristin Scott Thomas plays HM The Queen in the return of The Audience to London's West End, to the Apollo Theatre

As queen for sixty years, Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace - a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses.

The Audience play breaks this contract of silence - and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional - sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. In turn, the Queen can’t help but reveal her own self as she advises, consoles and, on occasion, teases. From young mother to grandmother these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister.

The Audience is written by Peter Morgan, whose other plays include Frost/Nixon, which premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in 2006 before transferring to the West End, Broadway and was later made into a film. His other film credits include The Damned United, The Last King of Scotland, State of Play and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

It was a very entertaining performance. As a foreigner I especially liked the combination of the play and the reactions of the British audience..

I loved the production; lovely to see something re: the queen while visiting London, since I missed the Jubilee celebrations. Great treatment of the concept and superb portrayals of counterpart characters as well. Especially moving to include Elizabeth the young girl. My favorite thing about all London theater is the great opportunity to see favorite actors. I sat in the grand circle, 28A I believe. Wish it had been marked as "view slightly obstructed" I couldn't see past the lighting unless I leaned forward. Wouldn't go back to the Apollo

The production was funnier than I expected (I had not read reviews) and the second half was particularly strong in all respects. Very well judged and performed - Kristin Scott Thomas was amazing and fully deserved the standing ovation at the curtain call. Well done!

It was by far my best purchase for the time I was in London! Fun, interesting and incredible actors.
