The British Black Theatre Awards have revealed their 2025 nominations, marking the seventh year of celebrating Black excellence in UK theatre. Since their launch in 2019, the awards have become a key moment in the cultural calendar, shining a spotlight on actors, writers, directors, and creatives whose work continues to transform British theatre. This year’s British Black Theatre Awards 2025 nominations showcase a mix of established stars and rising talents. Beverley Knight, already a powerhouse in both music and theatre, is nominated for Marie & Rosetta - continuing her run of acclaimed stage roles after winning the Best Supporting Female Actor in a Musical award for her dazzling turn in Sylvia. Similarly, Arinzé Kene returns as a nominee for Alterations at the National Theatre, having previously won the award for Best Male Actor in a Play for Misty. Musical theatre remains a vibrant highlight of the awards. The Lion King and MJ the Musical are both nominated once again, continuing their streak as perennial BBTA favourites. Both shows have received multiple nominations across past ceremonies, a testament to their enduring impact and the Black talent at their core.  Behind the scenes, Lynette Linton - Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre and a consistent force in championing underrepresented voices - is nominated for Best Director, adding another accolade to her already impressive career. Who are the main characters in MJ the Musical? MJ (1992 Michael Jackson) MJ is the main focus of the musical, representing Michael Jackson during the rehearsals for his Dangerous tour. He is intensely dedicated to his craft, striving for artistic brilliance in every detail of the show. As MJ works through creative decisions, navigates press scrutiny, and leads his team, the audience gets an intimate look at the complexities of his fame and genius during one of the most pivotal periods of his career. Michael (Thriller Era Michael Jackson) This version of Michael captures him in the early 1980s during the release of Thriller, the best-selling album of all time. It's a time when he was redefining what it meant to be a solo artist. Michael is seen experimenting with groundbreaking ideas and music, pushing himself beyond the expectations of others. His transformation from former child star to international icon is a major highlight of the show. Little Michael (Jackson 5 Era Michael Jackson) Little Michael represents Jackson in his childhood as the lead singer of The Jackson 5. Full of charm, energy, and a voice well beyond his years, he brings joy and innocence to the stage. At the same time, this character shows the early pressure and discipline that shaped his work ethic. His scenes highlight both the excitement of rising fame and the demands placed on a young boy expected to lead a family act. Joseph Jackson / Rob Played by the same actor, Joseph Jackson is Michael’s strict and often abusive father. As the driving force behind The Jackson 5’s early success, Joseph believes discipline is necessary for greatness. His controlling nature leaves a lasting impression on Michael. Rob, in contrast, is MJ’s tour manager in 1992. He is practical, focused on schedules and logistics, and tasked with keeping the Dangerous tour on track amid the intensity of MJ’s vision and personal pressure.

The thrilling West End production of MJ The Musical has unveiled its new cast as it continues its run at the Prince Edward Theatre. The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, now reimagined for the West End stage, brings the story of Michael Jackson’s artistry and legacy to life with an absolutely stellar cast. Who plays MJ in MJ The Musical? The West End welcomes a new King of Pop as Jamaal Fields-Green leads the London cast as MJ. Having previously played the role on Broadway, the US national tour, and in the West End as a cover, he takes over the iconic role from Myles Frost. Fields-Green made his professional debut with his performance in Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical Hamilton in Chicago. Who plays Joseph Jackson/ Rob in MJ The Musical? Ashley Zhangazha takes on the role of Joe Jackson, the famous patriarch of the Jackson family of entertainers. He previously starred in TINA: The Tina Turner Musical in the West End, and has performed in some of London’s most acclaimed theatres, from the West End to Shakespeare’s Globe to the National Theatre. In 2018, Zhangazha received the UK Theatre Award for Best Performance in a Musical for Guys & Dolls. Who plays Michael in MJ The Musical? Mitchell Zhangazha stars as Michael. With plenty of stage and screen credits to his name, Zhangazha has performed in West End runs of Dear Evan Hansen, Oliver! and The Lion King (to name a few) as well as Netflix’s The Beautiful Game. Who plays Rachel in MJ The Musical? Philippa Stefani takes on the role of Rachel, the ambitious filmmaker. Stefani was part of the Original Casts of various West End productions, including Wicked, Sister Act, Ghost and I Can’t Sing!. She also portrayed the role of ‘Mimi’ in RENT (UK tour), ‘Anita’ in West Side Story (Slovenia) and ‘Daniela’ in In the Heights (Kings Cross).  Who plays Katherine in MJ The Musical? Phebe Edwards portrays Katherine Jackson. Following on from a successful music career, this is Phebe’s West End debut. She has previously worked as a vocalist for various stars, including Rod Stewart, Will Young, Beverley Knight, Kylie Minogue and David Guetta.

There’s a new man in the mirror at the Prince Edward Theatre, as MJ the Musical makes a change! From 14th January 2025, Jamaal Fields-Green will take over the lead role in the critically acclaimed musical. This isn’t the first time Fields-Green will play MJ. The musical theatre star has the honour of being the only artist to portray the King of Pop in three global productions; on Broadway, on the US national tour and in the West End. (He was flown to the UK especially to cover the role earlier this year).  Fields-Green commented on the HIStory making announcement, commenting: “I’m deeply humbled and honoured to have the opportunity to perform in this show and role here in London. Ever since I made my debut in the West End earlier this year, something in the city has been calling me back. London – I’m excited to share my artistry and make some magic with you in this beautiful city. I hope to see you at the theatre, I promise you’re not going to want to miss it. Let’s party!”

Fittingly for the King of Pop, MJ the Musical is starting somethin’ pretty incredible at London’s Prince Edward Theatre. The Tony award winning show, created by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and Tony Award-winning director/choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, follows the making of Michael Jackson's 1992 Dangerous World Tour, and  features some of the most iconic songs in music history. What are the most famous MJ the Musical songs? Beat It, Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Bad, Thriller, Man in the Mirror, ABC, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'.... There are over 30 Michael Jackson songs included in MJ the Musical, including an incredible 12 number one hits. It would be quicker to answer, ‘Which famous songs aren’t included in MJ the Musical?’ The answer: None.  What is the last song in MJ the Musical? The final song in the musical is an instrumental version of  Working Day and Night, which is beautifully performed by a full orchestra. The last musical number in the show is a mash up of three of Michael Jackson's much loved hits, Jam (Reprise) / Black or White / Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (Reprise), which is performed by the entire ensemble.  MJ the Musical Act One songs There are 12 musical numbers in the first half of the musical, comprising of an incredible 21 hits!  Beat It You just can’t beat the opening of this high-octane show! Certified 8× platinum, the record peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, staying there for three weeks. It had huge success outside of America too, earning the top spot in the Spanish and Dutch charts. The song won the Record of the Year and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 1984 Grammys, and was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame. Tabloid Junkie/Price of Fame Similarly to Leave Me Alone, Why You Wanna Trip on Me and numerous other HIStory tracks, Tabloid Junkie and the Bad 25 track Price of Fame, both written by Jackson, show the singer's dissatisfaction with the media. The song is played after MJ is accosted by a reporter and her cameraman whilst he’s waiting to enter the Dangerous rehearsal room.  Shout / Papa's Got a Brand New Bag / (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher / Climb Ev'ry Mountain  We’re transported back in time and treated to some of Motown's biggest hits, as we hear the musical influences that shaped Michael Jackson's career. Jackie Wilson’s (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher was a number one hit and certified gold in the UK. Rolling Stones listed the track in their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The Love You Save / I Want You Back / ABC What’s better than one number one song? How about three! In this incredible mash-up, we hear three number one hits from the The Jackson 5, including their very first national single, and first number one, I Want You Back.  I'll Be There A warm-hearted moment performed by a young Michael, present day ‘Dangerous tour’ MJ, and matriarch Katherine, I’ll Be There is one of The Jackson 5’s most successful hits, showcasing their signature blend of youthful exuberance and sophisticated vocal harmony. The heartfelt lyrics express a promise of unwavering support and love. It is a message of commitment and assurance, and offers a sense of comfort and reliability to their growing legion of fans. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough / Blame It on the Boogie / Dancing Machine MJ accompanies his brothers and teenage self in this upbeat medley. Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough was Jackson’s second number-one solo hit, and highlighted MJs falsetto voice. It also showcased his now signature, vocal ‘hiccups’. Blame It on the Boogie was written by Mick Jackson (no you’re not just realising there was yet another talented sibling, he has no relation) and performed by The Jacksons, (the band dropped the 5 in 1975). Fun fact, Dancing Machine is credited with popularising Peter Crouch’s favourite dance move ‘The Robot’.  Stranger in Moscow This is the song Myles Frost performed for his first self-tape audition, and when you hear it live it’s clear to see why he got the role! Another song taken from his HIStory album, Stranger in Moscow is often described as one of Jackson’s ‘most haunting ballads’. The song attacks the press and explores fear and isolation, using the Russian capital as a metaphor. You Can't Win This isn’t the first time this song has been used in a musical! You Can’t Win was first used in the musical film, The Wiz, an urbanised retelling of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Michael Jackson had a starring role in the 1978 film, playing the lovable Scarecrow. Following the initial recording, Jackson and producer Quincy Jones went back to the studio to re-record the song, which became Jackson’'s first solo chart single on Epic Records I Can't Help It An album track from Jackson’s fifth studio album, Off the Wall, I Can’t Help It is performed by a teenage MJ. In the reflective, dreamlike sequence, MJ questions who he is becoming and explores the prospect of a budding romance. Keep the Faith Producer Quincy Jones, sings this gospel inspired number to a teenage MJ. He is encouraging young superstar to believe in himself and continue to push himself with his musical career.  Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' Jackson’s first number one single in seven years, this hit kick really started something in the charts! Another dig at the press and fake news, the song is about strangers who cause rumours in order to instigate an argument. The Rolling Stones described the hit as his ‘"most combative track" with  "emotions so raw that the song nearly goes out of control". It was nominated for the Best R&B Song at the 1984 Grammy Awards, but lost out to Billie Jean, another of Jackson's hit singles. So I don’t think he felt too Bad about it. Earth Song / They Don't Care About Us The Dangerous World Tour raised funds for Jackson’s Heal the World Foundation, so it’s only fitting that Act 1 ends with two of Jackson’s most eco-conscious songs. "Earth Song" was Jackson’s first to overtly discuss the environment and animal welfare. It earned the converted Christmas number one in the UK, and topped the charts in Germany, Iceland, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The Prince Edward Theatre was constructed during the Art Deco era, in 1930. It was named after the Prince of Wales at that time. The theatre has hosted numerous shows throughout the years, including the world premiere of the now-longest-running and most successful musical, MAMMA MIA! Other shows that made their West End debut there include Jersey Boys and Disney's Aladdin. It has also been the starting point for many famous faces, such as Hal Prince in his role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita, who helped propel Elaine Page into an international star. The Prince Edward Theatre has three seating sections: The Stalls, The Dress Circle, and The Grand Circle. The stage is large, providing great seating options throughout the auditorium. To help you choose the best seat for you, read on. The Stalls offer many seating choices, divided into four blocks. For the best view of the stage and to feel part of the action, the central section of the stalls is recommended. If you sit at the ends, you will have a side-on view as the rows spread wide across the auditorium. The Dress Circle is divided into 5 blocks. The middle of the first few rows offers the clearest view of the stage. However, all seats in the Dress Circle offer an unrestricted view of the stage. Occasionally, the view from seats at the end of the aisles may be affected by safety rails. The Upper Circle is directly above the Dress Circle. The central seats offer the best views of the stage.
