Written by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm at a time when #MeToo dominated headlines, Emilia is the never-before-told story of Emilia Bassano, a published poet long rumoured to have been Shakespeare’s muse – the Dark Lady. The moniker for this mystery woman comes from Shakespeare’s sonnets 127–154 in which she is described as having black hair and greyish skin. Featuring an all-female company playing both male and female roles, Shakespeare Globe’s Emilia is an absolute must-see!

Directed by Nicole Charles, Emilia takes a bold move with its all-female cast and is unlike anything you may have seen before! The 17-strong cast features Amanda Wilkin, Anna Andresen, Carolyn Pickles, Charity Wakefield, Clare Perkins, Jackie Clune, Jenni Maitland, Nadia Albina, Saffron Coomber, Sarah Seggari, Sophie Stone and Tanika Yearwood. The role of Emilia will be played by three different actresses portraying a different stage in Emilia’s life.

Malcolm has taken up a lot of creative liberty in depicting Emilia Bassano’s life, revealing her to be not only a poet, but also a teacher, mother, writer and one of the first female voices in English literature! The play was commissioned by Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, Michelle Terry, and the production has received a fleet of rave reviews from both audiences and critics alike!
