A recap on the Beetlejuice story

The plot tells the story of a strange and unusual teenager Lydia Deetz, who is obsessed with dying and being dead. This teenaged girl’s wishes come true when she moves into a new house where the former residents, who were recently killed in a car crash, haunt their home. However, they’re not the only supernatural creatures at play here, as this is where the devious poltergeist Beetlejuice also resides.

The Maitlands (the ghost couple) want their home back but the only way to do that is to scare the new family away. They don’t prove to have any luck and have to enlist the help of the pesky demon Beetlejuice who causes nothing but hellish havoc.

Burton’s cult movie vs Broadway phenomenon

The 1988 fantasy-comedy-horror American film was famously directed by Tim Burton. The story came from Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson and through Burton’s vision, they created a classic! It began with critical and commercial success and made a grossing profit of $58.7million and as the years went by, it proved to stand the test of time. The film won an Academy Award and was nominated for a BAFTA, being the most prestigious amongst their awards.

The Beetlejuice adaptation has given everyone what they wanted from the film; more Beetlejuice himself. It comes with extra Beetlejuice, so you won’t even need to summon him, and of course whimsical and wonderful songs. This musical has been nominated for an impressive 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. It has also seen Alex Brightman nominated for Best Actor for his role of Beetlejuice, but it is unknown if he would reprise the role in the West End should it make a transfer anytime soon.

Who has created the adaptation Beetlejuice The Musical?

The Tony Award-nominated book comes from Scott Brown and Anthony King.

Brown began his career as a journalist and has written for many significant outlets including Entertainment Weekly and GQ. He has also had a career in writing screenplay, his most recent work is being a writer and producer for Stephen King’s Castle Rock (Hulu), which is executively produced by J.J. Abrams. As well as writing for Beetlejuice, he also wrote and composed for the off-Broadway musical comedy Gutenberg! The Musical.

King, an Emmy-nominated writer, director and performer, also wrote for the off-Broadway musical Gutenberg! The Musical, which received a transfer to London, and earned itself critical acclaim. King has also worked in developing television shows for CBS, HBO, A&E and AMC, as well as writing and producing shows such as Silicon Valley, Broad City, and Wrecked, amongst others. Between 2005 and 2011, he was the Artistic Director for the UCB Theatre in New York.

The Tony Award-nominated score comes from actor and composer, Eddie Perfect. It was in 2007 that Perfect began his ascension into musical theatre when he starred in the Australian tour of Keating: The Musical as Alexander Downer, which went on to receive rave reviews. In 2008, he wrote and performed Shane Warne: The Musical. In 2014 he wrote some songs for the staged Strictly Ballroom and it was then he discovered his true love for composing and musicals. He moved to New York to tackle Broadway and with help of his friend Tim Minchin (Matilda The Musical), he managed to get a US Agent. It was after writing two songs for Beetlejuice which landed him the job and gave him a foot in the door of Broadway.

Beetlejuice The Musical tickets are just a dream for those on the British side of the pond but hopefully, soon enough, this Broadway hit will make its way to the West End, and London can see what it is missing out on!
