Set against the political turmoil of the English Civil War, Elvira is a Puritan maiden in love with Arturo, a Royalist. Although her father initially forbids their union, he eventually consents - until disaster strikes on their wedding day. Arturo abandons Elvira to help a Royalist prisoner escape, driving her to heartbreak and madness. As Arturo is later condemned for treason and faces execution, the lovers’ fragile happiness hangs perilously in the balance.
I puritani is sung in Italian with English surtitles, which are displayed on screens above the stage and around the auditorium.
