About the MAMMA MIA! musical

The bright and loving Sophie lives with her mother Donna Sheridan on the idyllic islands of Greece, and she has a dream - to have her father walk her down the aisle. Only…Sophie doesn’t know who her father is. One fateful day when she stumbles upon her mother’s old diaries, she finds three men’s names scribbled amongst hearts - Harry, Bill and Sam.

Sophie decides that it’s time to take matters into her own hands.

She doesn’t know which old flame to invite to her wedding, so she invites them all. When the three men dock up on the island, things take an interesting turn, and Sophie tries everything in her power to figure out the ultimate secret - which one of them is her father?

The history of MAMMA MIA!

From West End production to global phenomenon, MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of turning ABBA’s timeless songs into story-telling magic. To date, the production has been seen by over 70 million people in 16 different languages across 50 productions. In 2011, it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China.

MAMMA MIA! originally opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre on 6 April 1999, before transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. The musical re-opened at the Novello Theatre in 2012, where it recently celebrated its London 27th birthday on 6th April 2026. MAMMA MIA! in London has been seen by over 11 million people. It has played over 10,000 performances, and has broken box office records in all three of its London homes.

MAMMA MIA! is also known for being a box-office movie hit. Produced by Judy Craymer, MAMMA MIA! The Movie, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, is the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time, whilst its sequel is the highest-earning musical sequel in history. It is now a staple in the West End, so book your MAMMA MIA! London tickets to see this musical hit live on stage today.

Facts and critical acclaim for MAMMA MIA!

  • MAMMA MIA! is the 3rd longest-running musical in West End history.
  • 400 metres of Lycra are used to create the Super Trouper outfits for MAMMA MIA! in London
  • With all those ABBA tunes, it’s no wonder that Phyllida Lloyd directed both MAMMA MIA! the movie and the MAMMA MIA! West End and Broadway productions.
  • To date, there are nine cast recordings worldwide. All of ABBA’s hits can be listened to in German, Dutch, Spanish, Swedish, Korean, French, Japanese, and Chinese.
  • It took Judy Craymer 10 years to persuade Andersson and Ulvaeus to create the musical we know and love.
  • Craymer was inspired by ‘The Winner Takes It All’ to create the musical. The song started the process of creating a strong female lead character: that character would eventually become Donna.

Which Musical Should You Watch Next? 25 Shows for Every Mood

So you want to see a musical, but you don’t know what to watch. Don’t worry. Chill. We’re here to take the pressure off. No matter what your mood. No matter who’s accompanying you, there’s a suitable musical on, in the West End right now. From roll on the floor laughing comedies to relatable work drama. Despair about the current political climate to hen do vibes. There’s at least one show that will absolutely fit your mood. The shows you should watch if you want to party Mamma Mia! If you’re in the mood to celebrate or just have a boogie, head on down to Mamma Mia! The ABBA jukebox musical is packed full of your favourite pop hits and offers those sunny holiday vibes. Titanique Life is too serious! So lighten things up with Titanique. Taking a very serious tragedy and turning it into a goofy delight is no easy task, but the creative team behind the parody musical have done it beautifully! Expect giggles and guffaws at the tongue-in-cheek show. Magic Mike Live Okay. This is probably the show you should watch if you’re in the mood for a hen party rather than a party party. Magic Mike Live is made for the woman’s gaze, this is a steamy show that will have you and your pals cheering and blushing in equal measure. Musicals to watch if you want to be romantic Moulin Rouge! The Musical Wanna turn up the heat? Then get romantic with Moulin Rouge! The Musical. High energy and super sexy, this extravagant stage adaptation of the hit Baz Luhrmann film will get anyone in a mood. It’s the perfect date night show, that’s all we’re saying. Hadestown If Shakespeare has taught us anything, it’s that romance and tragedy go hand in hand. And that’s exactly what we get with this Greek myth retelling. Hadestown follows Orpheus as he tries to fight for his love, Eurydice, who’s made a deal with the devil himself. With beautiful music and an equally beautiful story, it’ll make you want to hold your loved one tight and never let go. Musicals to watch if you want to be inspired Hamilton If you’re feeling feisty and ready for a fight, head on over to Hamilton. The story about a group of men standing up for their nation is inspirational and rousing. You’ll be ready to take on the world after you spend 2 hours with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s clever verses. SIX Are you full of feminine rage? Excellent. Same. That’s why you should watch SIX. Though based on historical figures, SIX retells the stories of Henry VIII’s wives from their perspective. Beating down hundreds of years of misogyny, it sees the queens being pitted against each other before becoming a united front. Operation Mincemeat If you’re feeling uninspired and down on your luck, give Operation Mincemeat a go. Telling the true tale of a group of British operatives who saved thousands of lives by tricking the Nazis with just a dead body and some fake documents, it’s as inspirational as it is unbelievable. Billy Elliot The Musical Defying expectations and following your heart. It’s a brave thing to do. Especially if you’re a young boy in a mining town in the 1980s. Billy Elliot is about as inspiring as they come and the perfect musical to watch if you’re in the mood for something uplifting.

West End Theatres With Air Conditioning or Air Cooling Systems

With another UK heatwave in full swing, there are only so many hours you want to spend in a sticky park with a lukewarm drink in hand. As heatwaves become more frequent, knowing where you can find a more comfortable theatre experience has become increasingly useful. That’s why we’ve pulled together a handy guide to West End theatres with air conditioning or air cooling systems, along with some of the shows you can enjoy in them. Do London Theatres Have Aircon? Pride Playlist: Stage Songs to Celebrate Pride Month

Music is the most powerful tool for self-expression and celebration of love, but it’s even better on stage. The world of theatre is owed to our queer peers, and for that we’d like to honour the LGBTQ+ community and spread the love. Pride is all year round on the West End.

Summer Showstoppers: 10 Theatre Shows to Light Up Your Summer

It’s good vibes and tan lines time! As the temperatures rise to the highest degree and the scent of BBQ fills the street, our excitement for the hottest Summer West End theatre productions is coming in waves.  Whether you’re after nostalgia, spectacle, or something brand new, here are 10 summer theatre shows in London that should be firmly on your radar. MAMMA MIA! Nothing says summer in London quite like a trip to the sun-soaked Greek islands without actually leaving the city. MAMMA MIA! remains the ultimate feel-good escape, packed with ABBA’s greatest hits and an energy that feels like a holiday in musical form. Sophie’s search for her father plays out with comedy and chaos, all set to disco anthems you already know word for word. It’s breezy, nostalgic, and exactly the kind of show that pairs perfectly with long summer evenings. Disney's Hercules Disney’s Hercules brings myth, muscle, and maximum entertainment to the stage in a riot of colour and energy. Based on the animated classic, it follows the journey of a young hero discovering where he truly belongs. With big musical numbers and a playful tone, it’s pure summer spectacle. And with limited time left to catch it before it closes in early September, this is one of those “book it now or regret it later” shows. Oh, Mary! Chaotic, and very funny and with Catherine Tate leading the charge until 18th July, Oh, Mary! leans into bold humour and theatrical mischief with real confidence. It’s quick, punchy, and a little bit unhinged in the best possible way — exactly what you want from a hot London evening in a theatre. High Society High Society brings old-school glamour back into focus with a sparkling new stage adaptation full of wit, romance, and musical charm. Set against a backdrop of elegance and social intrigue, it’s a stylish production that feels made for sophisticated summer audiences. A perfect reminder that classic storytelling never really goes out of style. Beetlejuice The Musical The “ghost with the most” has landed, bringing anarchic fun and gothic chaos to the stage. Beetlejuice The Musical is loud, outrageous, and unapologetically weird in all the right ways. It’s a full-throttle theatrical experience that leans into dark comedy and spectacle, making it one of the hottest new arrivals in town. If you like your musicals a little chaotic, this one delivers in spades.
