What is Alcina about?

Step into the enchanting world of Handel’s Alcina, where magic, love, and deception collide. The powerful sorceress Alcina lures unsuspecting lovers to her mystical island, only to transform them into animals once they outlive her affection. Her latest captive is the brave knight Ruggiero - but his devoted wife, Bradamante, is determined to save him.

Disguised as a man named ‘Ricciardo’, Bradamante infiltrates Alcina’s enchanted realm, setting off a whirlwind of mistaken identities, forbidden attraction, and dangerous intrigue. When Alcina’s sister, Morgana, falls for the mysterious newcomer, jealousy and deception threaten to unravel the sorceress’s carefully woven spell. As Alcina’s magical world begins to crumble, will she keep Ruggiero under her enchantment, or will true love prove stronger than even the most powerful magic?

Filled with dazzling Baroque music, unforgettable characters, and timeless themes of love, loyalty, and illusion, Handel’s Alcina is a spellbinding opera that continues to captivate audiences around the world.

Facts and critical acclaim for Alcina

  • "Witty and vibrant staging full of beastly style" - The Guardian
  • Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production
  • The opera is filled with musical gems, although Ruggiero’s wistful aria, ‘Verdi prati’, Morgana’s acrobatic ‘Tornami a vagheggiar’, and Alcina’s barnstorming ‘Ma quando tornerai’ are particular highlights.
  • Epic poem Orlando furioso had a wide cultural influence – in addition to Alcina, it inspired two other Handel operas (Ariodante and Orlando) and much other art and theatre, including scenes in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.
